Happy Summer!
Stay tuned for registration information in early August

Peak Families, Spring is here! The active learning garden is showing its first flowers, the bike park is drying out, and we have lots to celebrate as we approach the last 7 weeks of school! Here are the most important updates in our school community: *Friday April 22nd - JeffCO Non-Student Contact Day (NO SCHOOL) - This is the last for the year and we appreciate your flexibility and support with this additional time for staff required by our district. Here's the link to the JeffCO calendar so you can see the weeks ahead: https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://track.spe.schoolmessenger.com/f/a/gLrYkC7WYDsy7AI82o2fWg**A/AAAAAQA*/RgRkNLSZP0ScaHR0cHM6Ly9wMTJjZG40c3RhdGljLnNoYXJwc2Nob29sLmNvbS9Vc2VyRmlsZXMvU2VydmVycy9TZXJ2ZXJfNjI3ODgxL0ZpbGUvSmVmZmNvJTIwUFMvQWJvdXQlMjBKZWZmY28vQ2FsZW5kYXJzLzIwMjEtMjAyMiUyMERpc3RyaWN0JTIwRmFtaWx5JTIwQ2FsZW5kYXIucGRmVwdzY2hvb2xtQgpiSxmBU2IruIQHUiNtZWxpc3NhLmJ1c3RhbWFudGVAamVmZmNvLmsxMi5jby51c1gEAAAAAQ**A__;fn5-fn4!!Bj3pJzH8i9PN1EsMi1am!3oHOug4rC528NvP7rYWGKdGYLwoK-GA-JHFilKuRX_R-LQHyhPlXOoKN7Ax5slNXRDFY3pNSbYbgEHk7sayh2UERlXiS913QjKb5n0Aa$ *May 25th - will be the last day of school for students, even if we receive a snow day call from JeffCO. Due to our contact hours with students, we have exceeded what is required because of our extended learning time grant. We will use the last 2 days of the final week to fully box up classrooms and prepare for the summer installation of new flooring in our gym and classrooms (JeffCO Bond Funding)! If you would like to volunteer any support with the close up process in classrooms, please contact Sarah Goudie our Family Engagement Liaison ([email protected]), we're happy to take any help we can get! *One Time Funds Update - To honor the input from our survey, teachers have the option to train with Philippe Ernewin Director of Education and Teacher Training at Denver Academy. Philippe has spent the past 28 years supporting teachers in meeting the needs of diverse learners and is an excellent and highly regarded trainer in our area. This will be a 2-day training on April 22nd and 23rd. Based on the response, we plan to continue training with Philippe as we design continued improvements for next school year. *Also, we officially contracted Eldorado Climbing Walls to build a bouldering wall in our gym! The wall is designed to engage students at all skill levels in our school and can lead to some amazing indoor rock climbing experiences next year. The construction will be completed this summer and we will celebrate its opening at the start of next school year in August! *Staffing Updates - This is the time of year when we hire and also learn of CREW members moving on to new adventures in their career.      *Ms. Erika Williams - As many of you know our amazing grant manager Ms. Erika took a new position out in Grand Junction leading an outdoor/environmental education center. Erika will always be a part of our CREW and we can't thank her enough for her dedication and service to the start up of our school. We have hired another great CREW member Ms. Elizabeth Hamilton, who has extensive experience guiding adventure trips, coordinating community events, and creating partnerships in a community to support real world learning. We are so lucky that she is able to jump right in and support our ELT grant now and going into next school year.      *Ms. Jennah had a baby! Eliza Pine Carlson was born last Sunday and mom and baby are healthy and happy:). Ms. Jennah will join us again in August as we ramp up for next school year. With her absence and Ms. Elizabeth just starting, we are focusing on the ELT time lessons and holding on bike park time until we are sure we are out of the rain/snow season. Bike park programming will start up again the week of April 25th.      *Ms. Laura Hoenig has accepted a position at South Lakewood Elementary. Ms. Laura is taking her start up skills to a school looking to move towards more expeditionary learning! It is very hard to say goodbye to one of our founding CREW teachers and we will miss her passion for the outdoors, strong teaching skills, and wonderful singing voice that has inspired many over the past 4 years. We just informed students this week because we are involving students in our new hiring process that I will describe below. Ms. Laura is very dedicated to our kids and will love them and support the transition of a new Peak teacher in 3rd grade. *NEW Peak Hiring Process - We are always striving to be purposefully different and realize our vision of making learning challenging, meaningful, and adventurous at Peak....and that includes hiring! The traditional question/answer hiring process gives some insights into people's view of education, however lacks the necessary focus on the unique process of teaching at an expeditionary learning school. Here's a summary of our new hiring process that we believe will help us select the next inspiring teachers at Peak:   1) After initial screening for qualifications, experience, and passion/interest in expeditionary learning, candidates are sent a performance challenge first. The challenge requires candidates to view a lesson at the grade level of the position and send us their thoughts on how to make a grade level lesson as engaging as possible and how they would plan to expeditionize learning throughout the unit of study. 2) Our staff committee will screen videos based on agreed upon qualities identified by staff, students, and parents to select 1-4 finalist candidates to move on to the next round. 3) For the first time ever, we will gain YOUR insights (family members and staff) on what you are looking for in the next Peak CREW members by filling out this brief survey: https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://track.spe.schoolmessenger.com/f/a/ZFvG3srBC0TcRoFZvK9HZQ**A/AAAAAQA*/RgRkNLSZP0QjaHR0cHM6Ly9mb3Jtcy5nbGUvTTd2OFpVZnFxc0hzOUgzaTdXB3NjaG9vbG1CCmJLGYFTYiu4hAdSI21lbGlzc2EuYnVzdGFtYW50ZUBqZWZmY28uazEyLmNvLnVzWAQAAAAB__;fn5-!!Bj3pJzH8i9PN1EsMi1am!3oHOug4rC528NvP7rYWGKdGYLwoK-GA-JHFilKuRX_R-LQHyhPlXOoKN7Ax5slNXRDFY3pNSbYbgEHk7sayh2UERlXiS913QjLs3_eOW$ (Due Wednesday of this week if possible) 4) To increase student agency and give a real world learning opportunity, I went to students in 2nd grade to gain insights on the qualities they are looking for in their next teacher....which was fascinating and hilarious! Also, out of 2nd and 3rd grade students, we randomly selected 4 interested students from 2nd grade and 2 from 3rd grade to create our first ever Peak Student Interview Committee. This amazing CREW will have the chance to create questions for the 3rd grade finalist candidates, interview each one, and give us feedback on the interviews. 5) The finalists will finish with our staff committee interview and tour of Peak. The interview will have questions (some may come from the survey above) and scenarios that give them a clear picture of our unique school and the expeditionary learning process. *Pizza Celebration! We celebrated the Battle of the Books work of students and staff at the end of day this past Friday, it was so much fun. Thanks to PTA and everyone that continues to support reading throughout our school community. Keep up the reading support with the Read-a-thon sponsored by PTA, check details in SeeSaw messages from Ms. Sarah Goudie. *CMAS Update - Students are ROCKING CMAS testing and will finish up over the next two weeks. We appreciate everyone encouraging their performance, making sure they are getting enough sleep, and keeping up the great attendance each day to avoid make-up testing. That's a lot of information! I look forward to the many field experiences and end of year events and will describe more in the next update. Make it a great day! Sincerely, Mr. Tim Carlin Principal of Fun Peak Expeditionary School at Pennington
