Peak Expeditionary School at Pennington is purposefully different. We are here to change learning and change lives. We believe learning should be challenging, meaningful, and adventurous!  Peak is a PreK-5 school that has a Colorado environment theme at each grade level (Pre K - Shortgrass, K-Foothills, 1-Montane Forest, 2nd-Alpine, 3rd-Riparian (river), 4th-Canyonlands, 5th-Alpine).  Our students will go on outdoor adventures into each environment with the support of Colorado Mountain Club, Snowboard Outreach Society, and other community sponsors.  Students will have a chance to hike, bike, climb, and even snowboard in the Rocky Mountains that we call home.

As an Expeditionary School we offer hands on learning expeditions connected to our curriculum for all students, taking learning outside our classrooms and into our community.  Our approach to literacy integrates Science & Social Studies topics that we connect with field experiences as students think like: scientists, mathematicians, journalists, engineers, and explorers.  We believe in a 3 dimensional view of student achievement that includes: Knowledge & Skills, Character, and Quality Work.  Our character education is called CREW, which stands for Courage, Respect, Empathy, and quality Work.  Students engage in project based learning experiences connected with our CREW character traits throughout the school year and display their amazing work throughout our building.

We offer expanded learning time each day through integrated Science experiences at every grade level & enrichment opportunities that range from Karate, to Chess, to Engineering with NREL.  Our school day runs from 7:50 am-4:20 pm, which allows for students to engage in these rich community based experiences.

Peak offers meals and snacks for all students as part of our expanded learning day, before and after school care, and full day kindergarten, Band and Orchestra for all 5th graders, monthly community engagement nights and outreach and in-reach programs for our families.

Peak Families,

What an amazing kick off for our 2nd year!  From the sing along assembly with our Superintendent Dr. Glass, to having our first PeakEx student speaker Cameron remind us of how We Are CREW, to all the new connections emerging between returning and new students, it was a great first few days of school.  Thank you for also being thoughtful and patient with our new drop off/pick up process, we know it will take a week or two to make it as smooth and safe as possible.  Here are some important reminders for the upcoming week:

*Monday is a late start day each week to allow for professional learning and development of our licensed staff members.  This is a norm here at Peak and other schools around JeffCo are trying to move in this direction because of the benefit of time that it gives our staff, enabling us to provide the best experience possible each week.  School does not officially start until 9, however if you need to drop off your student at 7:50 our YMCA and paraprofessional staff will supervise students until 9.

*Tuesday & Wednesday are normal school days with a focus on both Empathy and quality Work in CREW.

*Thursday & Friday are flex testing days where students are coming to school by appointment only.  If you haven’t signed up for a time, please coordinate with you students classroom teacher.

We have so much to celebrate this year and I want to thank all of our families for choosing Peak and for trusting us with your child.  As a father of 3 in JeffCo, I know the excitement you see when your students are truly engaged in learning.  As we continually work towards our vision of making learning “challenging, meaningful, and adventurous”, I know you will see that excitement and engagement every day here at Peak.

Make it a great day!

Mr. Tim Carlin
